When does the work at Route 47 and Route 176 actually end? You can find three answers right now, and they come from three public sources that all deal with the same 1.8 miles of road.
The contract says October 31, 2026. The Village of Lakewood's website says fall 2026. The Illinois Department of Transportation's latest update, published August 28, 2026, says early 2027. The last one is the newest, so it's the one to plan around. That means the cones near Lakewood's southwest corner should stay up past Halloween, past the contract date, and into the new year.
Three dates for one job
These are the dates on the public record, oldest first:
- March 8, 2024. IDOT opened bids on the contract. Plote Construction, Inc. was listed as the submitted bidder at $50,387,361.97.
- May 10, 2024. IDOT's letting record lists the contract as executed.
- October 31, 2026, plus 10 working days. This is the completion date in the IDOT contract detail.
- "Fall of 2026." The Village of Lakewood's construction projects page still uses this phrase. The page has no date on it.
- Early 2027. This is the forecast in IDOT's August 28, 2026 McHenry County construction-season release, which also says work began in 2024 and daily lane closures are in place.
A year earlier, IDOT's August 29, 2025 release gave the same project an "anticipated completion in 2026." In the twelve months between those two releases, the finish moved into the next calendar year. Neither release explains why, and we haven't found a public explanation anywhere else.
Here's the current wording, straight from IDOT:
"Illinois 47 (Seminary Street) at Illinois 176 and at Pleasant Valley Road intersection reconstruction, road realignment and culvert replacement. Work began in 2024 and is anticipated to be completed in early 2027. Daily lane closures are in place."
What the extra months are paying for
This is more than a repaving job, and that helps explain why the schedule has room to slip. IDOT's bulletin description calls it a 1.8-mile intersection reconstruction and corridor widening along IL 47 at IL 176, covering both the north and south junctions, plus a realignment of Pleasant Valley Road. The work crosses the City of Crystal Lake, the Village of Lakewood, and Dorr Township.
IDOT's project study for Route 47 from Reed Road to U.S. 14 lays out the corridor plan:
- Two lanes in each direction, separated by a grass or raised median, on a road that has been mostly two lanes.
- Paved shoulders through high-speed areas, and turn lanes throughout.
- Room for a sidewalk and a shared-use path for people on foot and on bikes.
- Water-quality features such as bioswales, native plantings, and ditch changes.
The biggest change to how people drive here comes at the south junction. Today, Route 176 meets Route 47 at a three-leg intersection. IDOT's plan shifts Pleasant Valley Road so it lines up with that junction and makes it a four-leg intersection. Once that's done, the current Pleasant Valley Road will no longer connect to Route 47 where it does now, and IDOT says it will end in a cul-de-sac. Parcels along the existing road that are affected will get access from the new alignment.
So the turn you've made onto Pleasant Valley for years will be in a different place. We didn't find a public notice saying the new alignment has opened or the old connection has closed, so we can't tell you which stage the job is in today. The IDOT page with the design scope is also older than construction, and its "Phase II" marker shouldn't be read as a current status.
The money tells you how the scope grew. The same IDOT study page lists $44.5 million for the 47/176 and Pleasant Valley improvements in the FY 2020–2025 program, and that figure included engineering and land acquisition. The construction bid alone came in at about $50.4 million in March 2024.
North of here, the clock runs to 2029
When the 47/176 job wraps up, that won't be the end of construction on Route 47. The same August 2026 IDOT release lists a second project, the reconstruction of Illinois 47 from U.S. 14 to Illinois 120 with added lanes. Work started this spring and is expected to be finished in late 2029, with daily lane closures.
The Northwest Herald reported in January 2026 that the Woodstock widening was set to start again that spring after a yearlong delay, and that it includes roundabouts at Lake Avenue, McConnell Road, and Judd Street/Irving Avenue. The south junction near Lakewood is designed as a realigned four-leg intersection, so drivers heading north will go through two different intersection designs on one state route.
Put the two timelines together and they overlap for the rest of this year and into 2027. If you drive Route 47 from Lakewood toward Woodstock, that trip will run through some active construction until the later project is done.
Even in a well-run work zone, the trip can change without warning. On June 10, 2026, a crash in the construction zone north of Route 176 closed Route 47 in both directions for about an hour before it reopened, according to McHenry County Blog. On a road with one lane each way and a cone line, there isn't much room to get around a closure.
The corner that has been waiting on the road
Some of the land at this intersection is tied to the road project in another way. A May 2020 Northwest Herald story reported that the village sold about 10 acres at Routes 47 and 176 for the Oasis on 176/47 travel center. In that story, the village president said he expected the travel center to bring more development to the intersection.
Lakewood's travel center page still lists the Oasis as an approved commercial travel center, anchored by Amoco, with a convenience store, Subway, and Dunkin' Donuts planned. The page still uses the heading "Coming to Lakewood." It has no date, and we didn't find a 2026 source saying whether the site is open, under construction, or still waiting. Until the village posts something newer, the Oasis is best described as a plan for a corner where the road around it is still being rebuilt.
The rest of October, with the cones still up
The construction won't stop for Halloween, and the late-October calendar around Lakewood is full:
- October 12: Lakewood's Fall Brush Pick-up begins, according to the village calendar.
- October 24, 10 a.m. to noon: The Crystal Lake Park District holds its free, drop-in Truck or Treat at Main Beach, 300 Lakeshore Dr., rain or shine.
- October 24, 6:30 p.m.: Barn Dance Night is at the Main Beach Pavilion for ages 15 and up. Advance registration costs $10 for residents and $13 for nonresidents.
- October 31, 4 to 7 p.m.: These are the village's trick-or-treat hours.
Most of these are inside the village or toward Crystal Lake, away from the 47/176 work. If any of your errands or school runs normally go through the south junction, the August 2026 IDOT release is the most recent official word that daily lane closures are still in place.
What to watch for next
Three updates would tell Lakewood drivers the most, and none of them has been published yet:
- A notice that the new Pleasant Valley Road alignment is open and the old connection to Route 47 is closed.
- An updated Lakewood construction page that replaces "Fall of 2026" with IDOT's newer timeline.
- A firm completion date from IDOT in place of the general "early 2027."
Until those come out, the August 28, 2026 IDOT release is the most current public schedule for this intersection. It puts the end of the job past this month's contract date and into early 2027.
Road projects like this one change how a location gets described. When a home sits near Pleasant Valley Road or along the Route 47 corridor, buyers will want to know which access is temporary, which is permanent, and when the work ends. If you're thinking about selling and want to know how the 47/176 timeline might affect how your home is presented and priced, Tamara O'Connor and the team can walk you through it.
